NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE

The National Health Insurance covers everyone residing in Korea. The benefit package for foreign residents is the same as that for Korean nationals, meaning anyone on the plan pays 20-50 percent of the treatment received at a hospital or medical clinic and 30 percent of the charge for prescription drugs

• Insurance Payments
  • Insurance payments are made in three month periods and in advance, whereby the insurance coverage is deemed to take effect on the date of foreigner’s registration. The rate for foreigners is equal to that of Korean nationals, which is approximately KRW 40,000 per month.
• Enrollment
  • Foreigners may visit one of the two branch offices in Jeonju of the National Health Insurance Corporation with your passport and foreigner registration card.

HEALTH INSURANCE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Upon arrival, all international students are insured by Woosuk. Insurance fee will be around USD 210$. When disease occurs after entering Korea, according to the insurance policy, medical fee is to be paid by the student first and then is to be reimbursed by the insurance company later. Students may apply for the reimbursement of the medical fee via the Center for Global Relation of Woosuk or directly to the Insurance company.
But it will take a little more time to get reimbursed via Woosuk since there is some more time needed for us to forward the documents to the insurance company. It is better to check compensation range for sure via the Center in advance because there could be differences of insurance terms by each insurance company.

Documents to be submitted : An application, A photocopy of bankbook (account number shown), M.D.'s diagnosis, Receipt, Prescription, other documents (upon request of the insurance company)

• Accidents
  • Expenses related with the accident will be compensated up to the set limit.
• Accidental Injury Caused to Others
  • Expenses related with accidental injury caused to others will be compensated up to the set limit.

Should exchange students from global partner universities arrange for health insurance from their respective home countries, applying for Woosuk insurance would be responsible for each student. But please bear in mind that your home insurance should cover overseas diseases, injuries and so on. If home insurance covers all, exchange students should hand in a copy of their health insurance to the Center for Global Relations upon arrival.

Foreigner Registration

Foreigners who will stay for more than 90 days after their arrival in Korea must register. It is illegal for them to stay on after the first 90 days without being registered. Upon arrival on campus, students are required to leave their passport behind the Center for Global Relations (CGR) their passport and other necessary documents for an application of foreigner registration. It takes up to ten days for the Immigration Office to process the application.

Documents to be submitted

• Application form (available at the CGR)

• One headshot color photo (3x4cm)
• Processing fee : KRW 70,000 (to be paid for government revenue stamp)
• Documents necessary for respective status of sojourn
  • International students admitted for undergraduate and postgraduate studies need a certificate of registration from CGR to get an overseas study (D-2) visa.
  • International students admitted for Korean language courses need a certificate of registration from the Institute of Korean Language and Culture (IKLC) to get a general training (D-4) visa.
  • Foreign nationals hired as a full-time lecturer/professor by the University or visiting the University on an exchange basis need a business registration certificate issued by Woosuk University to get a professorship (E-1) visa.
  • Language teachers of foreign nationality need a business registration certificate issued by the University to get a foreign language instructor (E-2) visa.

Foreigner Registration Card Re-issuance

• Reasons for re-issuance
  Application for re-issuance must be made within 14 days of the reasons stated below

  Lost, stolen, or damaged registration card

  Lack of space for necessary items to be displayed

  Changes in details on the existing card (name, Gender, birth date and nationality)

Extension of Sojourn Period

Foreigners who intend to stay in Korea beyond the initial period of stay must obtain permission for extension of their stay.

• Period of application

  Extension applicants must submit applications two months prior to the visa expiration date. When they file for an extension of their visa after the expiration date, they are subject to a fine.

Foreigners those intend to have regular education (bachelor, master, or doctor) or to do specific study in a college, university, or graduate school established under the provision of Education Law or college or higher level academic research institute established under the provisions on special law

• Standard entrance approval including result for scholastic achievement and financial ability

• Fee (revenue stamp 130,000won, but who entered without visa or who aren't registered yet should pay 10,000won aliitionally)

• Introduction to the Center

  The Immigration Contact Center is a multilingual information counter that offers civil affairs consultation, which is needed for the adjustment of foreigners living in Korea, and information guidance through online and telephone without any language barriers under the Law on Treatment of Foreigners in Korea.
